FAQ

Why do you want my suggestions?

Over the years I've discovered that my most memorable travel experiences have come from personal recommendations. Visiting the gallery of ex-votive paintings in Livorno in Vroom by the Sea, for example. And following a hand-drawn map given to me by a fellow traveller to find Fatty's Place in Bam in The Wrong Way Home.

Why you? Well, I figure that the people who read my books and visit my website have the same outlook on travel as me, a similar sense of humour and a highly tuned sense of the bizarre.

The perfect tour guides, in other words.

How do I post my suggestions?

Simply visit the Have Your Say forum, register as a user and then browse through the various topics until you find somehwere to leave your suggestion.

If you can't find somewhere appropriate you can start a new topic.

And if it all seems a bit complicated check out the forum's extensive FAQ section for help.

Can I contact you directly instead?

While I'd prefer people to leave their suggestions on the forum so that they prompt debate and ideas from other posters I can understand that some of you may prefer to contact me directly. Especially if your message contains personal information like your phone number or the PIN for your bank account. So I've set up a special email account.

You can email me here.

How did you divide up the UK?

I realise that classifying regions in the UK is a dangerous and sensitive task so I consulted a number of guidebooks to see how they did it. When that proved fruitless I simply googled 'UK Regions.'

One of the first sites I came across was the Naturist UK Fact File (NUFF) web site. It proved hugely influential.

For the purposes of the suggestion forum, I have divided the UK up into 14 regions:
UK Regions
London
Eastern England
East Midlands
West Midlands
Yorkshire and Humber
Northeast England
Northwest England
Scotland
Islands and Highlands
Northern Ireland
Wales
Southwest England
Southeast England
Channel Islands

When are you setting off?

May
02

I've been dipping my toes in since the beginning of the year. The trip will get underway fully in May.
