Let them eat (Vespa) cake

Vespa CakeI’ve got a friend back in Australia who has supported Manchester City his entire life. Whenever I see a Man City result I think of him and wonder how he’s taking the win/loss/draw.

The recent sale of City to an Abu Dhabi investment group means I’ve been thinking of him a lot. Without even speaking to him I know he wouldn’t be happy, especially if they start winning. That’s just not the City way.

In a roundabout way, that’s what has happened to me with Vespas. I’ve written two books about them and now all I get is Vespa-themed presents from my family for birthdays, Christmas and Father’s Day. I’m notoriously difficult to buy for apparently – although I’d be happy with any gadget – so it’s come as a relief to everyone.

It seems my readers see a Vespa and think of me as well. Pete Baiden was walking through the covered markets at Covent Garden yesterday and spotted this cake made in the shape of an orange Vespa. The first thing he did was take a picture of it on his phone and email it to me.

I’ll have to get the name of the shop off him. I reckon my publishers should buy me one to celebrate the release of Vroom by the Sea in the UK in April next year.

    Could be worse, you could have mentioned that you played golf, once. Then you’d get nothing but useless gadgets for the world’s most boring sport!

    If you ever write a book about pregnancy I can make an appropriate cake;
