It was one of those magical crisp clear winter’s days here in London yesterday so I popped over to Gatton Park with my daughter Daisy to check out the Millennium Stone Circle.
In 1823 William Cobbett described Gatton Park as ‘a very rascally spot of the earth.’ He was a radical, apparently, and a little upset that a tiny hamlet like Gatton Park could elect two members to the House of Commons whereas large towns like Birmingham and Manchester had none.
Disappointingly, that rascal element was eradicated with the passing of the Reform Act in 1832. But in it’s place is a stone circle, whacked up in the year 2000 to commemorate the Millennium. There are ten stones altogether, each one representing a 200 year period and inscribed with an appropriate quote from the era.
Daisy was more interested in the Belted Galloway cows grazing nearby, spotted with her National Geographic binoculars.
