Those of you who have read The Wrong Way Home may remember that I visited a newly-opened park in Budapest that displayed Soviet-Era statues that were in danger of being melted down after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I popped in before heading off to Maxim’s, a Soviet-themed restaurant where I had a Stalin pizza.
Well, British artist Liane Lang visited more recently and took a series of photos of the statues, throwing in a few life-sized rubber humans and body parts for good measure. They form the centrepiece of an exhibition at The Gallery Soho. she’s called Monumental Misconceptions: A Journey Through Sculptural Budapest and it’s on until the 3rd of October.
If you can’t make it, you can check out a selection of the photos at The Telegraph website here. Or better still, pop over to Budapest and visit the real thing. I was pleased to note from the photos that the park still looks scruffy and neglected. And I’m sure the guard will chase you off if you try to use the hand driers in the toilet to keep warm on a bitterly cold day like he did with me.
