A sad day for cricket

I’ve got to admit I was critical of the Aussie cricket team when they refused to tour Pakistan last year. Cricketers are revered as Gods on the sub continent. Like a lot of people I was convinced that these ‘heroes’ would never be targets.

That changed this morning when the Sri Lankan cricket team were attacked by gunmen. They were on their way to Gaddaffi Stadium in Lahore. That it happened midway through a Test seems to make it worse.

Not so long ago I played an impromptu game of cricket with some street urchins on a back lane in Karachi. When I clean bowled their best batsman – quite by chance – they were convinced all Aussies bowled like Glenn McGrath.

It seems such a long, long time ago now.

    Peter,
I couldn’t agree with you more – a very very sad day. Not just from the sport but for Pakistan and (I mean this without sounding over the top) The World.

What will it mean for Pakistan, a Cricket loving country, when cricket palyers become targets? Will it stop Cricket in the country altogeather, or will it (I hope) turn people against the terrorists even more. Did teh terrorists score an ‘own goal’ with this attack? Lets hope so.

    Mick
