What do travel writers talk about?

Highly sort after red giraffeI caught up with my American mate Marie the other night. She was on her way to Kuwait for the opening of a theme park. The theme park has been ‘re-imagined’ so that it is based on characters from the comic series, The 99.

Marie used to work for Marvel Comics and has brought her expertise to The 99. She has also written a great book about travelling through Africa called Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik.

Marie’s one of the most well-travelled people I know. Whenever I get an email from a female reader asking me if I think they could do the same kind of travelling I do I tell them about Marie.

We met outside Wimbeldon station. I had Daisy with me so we wandered up to the Giraffe cafe up in the village. They do good kid’s meals there and give every child a plastic giraffe swizzle stick with their drink and an orange balloon as they leave.

It’s fairly adult friendly as well. Good value meals, a licensed bar and friendly staff.

Marie said that she had mentioned to a new love interest that we were catching up and he asked ‘What do travel writers talk about?’

The answer?

Basically how much fun kids can extract from a free, helium-filled piece of rubber.

They give adults plastic giraffes too. Another thing travel writers talk about? “I want the yellow one, not the blue one.”
