Today I picked up my first ever pair of glasses. Years spent squinting at a computer screen have finally taken their toll.
They’re just reading glasses at the moment. But I can’t help feeling that they’re the first step on the slippery slope to permanent visual impairment.
At first I thought it was my long vision that was going. I was standing on a platform at Manchester Piccadilly and couldn’t make out what was displayed on the departure screens.
Then I stayed with Andy and Natalie at Broadhaven in Pembrokeshire. Andy runs the Specsavers at Haverfordwest and booked me in for an eye test. It turns out the problem was with the close stuff. My eyes were so strained from reading, using my new iPhone etc that when I looked up to read things in the distance it look them a while to adjust.
I didn’t buy a pair of glasses straight away. I knew that if I did have Sally to advise me I’d end up buying a pair that would make me look like Elton John.
As it turns out there are only two types of frames available anyway. Ones that make you look like a granny. And ones that make you look like you work in publishing or graphic design.
I went the ubiquitous rectangle publishing frames hoping they’d somehow make me look more thoughtful and intelligent.
I discovered that is way too much to ask of any pair of glasses.
This is where you'll find everything you need to know about me and my books.
You have the look of a livornese vespa mechanic now….
Ha! Andy, you’re right! Subconsciously I want to be Marco.
Don’t worry about it Peter. I had the same problem. I used to fall asleep because of eyestrain, so I ended up having to purchase some reading glasses. My eyes have remained stable since the advent of the glasses for 16 years, so try not to fret! There is hope!
Who’s the smarty-pants in the photo?
