Hats of to Apple

Mac IconFirst up, I’d like to say I’m no Apple Mac fanboy. I didn’t buy my first Mac until January this year – a 24″ iMac. Yes, it looks great. Yes, the OS is simple and intuitive. And yes, it comes with some pretty cool programs.

But to be honest I didn’t think it was THAT much better than the Windows machines I’d been using. Mac like to slag off Windows in their ads but in my experience PCs ain’t that bad. And you get a lot more bang for your bucks.

However, when things go wrong I’ve discovered Apple are WAY ahead.

Let me explain. When I got back from Poland I switched on my iMac and discovered some sort of evil growth had taken over the bottom right-hand corner of my screen. At first I thought it was mould but after a quick Google I discovered it was condensation trapped between the glass and the LED screen of the monitor. A design/manufacturing glitch particular to one batch of iMacs, apparently. The next morning it was gone and didn’t return.

Mac MouldI bought the iMac back in January so it was still under warranty. I booked an appointment with a ‘Mac Genius’ at my local Apple Store and at the agreed time turned up with my iMac. I started getting the old ‘send-it-off-to-get-looked-at-you’ll-get-it-back-in-two-weeks’ speil so I showed him the photos I’d taken of the problem, told him this was my first Mac after switching from Windows, hinted that I was in the market for a new laptop and informed him that my Windows PC was still running fine. He called over his manager who agreed to replace my iMac with a brand new one immediately. Furthermore they’d migrate across all the stuff on the old one to the new one.

The upshot is that I’ve got a brand new computer with a faster processor and a better screen.

I can’t imagine HP being so accommodating.

Welcome to the other side….it doesn’t take long to become an Apple/Mac convert. As a long time Apple/Mac user, I would say there is no other way to go!!! The Genius Bar has always been great whenever I’ve been there with a problem. My hard drive just died and they replaced it right there and then — well, I’m sort of friendly with a Genius anyway, but I think at most it would have only taken overnight. Make sure you have AppleCare, once your 1 year warranty is up you’ll have to pay for anything big that needs to be fixed — AppleCare covers you for 3 years from the date of purchase. I have the Time Capsule for back up and I recommend that too. After they replaced my hard drive, I just plugged in the Time Capsule and after all the files transferred, it was like nothing ever happened, everything was just as it was before. Time Capsule backs up every hour on the hour with Time Machine and even does it wirelessly to my laptop! Glad to hear it all worked out for ya!
