Five signs that Ryanair have seriously lost it (Part II)

Mr SuperflyYour honours, I present to you exhibit two in my case to have the marketing department of Ryanair committed – the truly horrendous Mr Superfly.

To quote the Ryanair inflight magazine: ‘The concept of Mr Superfly is that he is a super cool action hero who flies around flyspace saving the world.’ Worse, he has his on song that Ryanair is inflicting on the world on the 10th of November. A ring tone and ‘Buzzin’ Club Mix’ will be available for download as well.

Ryanair are obviously hoping Mr Superfly will be the next Crazy Frog. But whereas Crazy Frog was a bit of a bad ass who didn’t mind waving his animated genitalia around, Mr Superfly is L.A.M.E. The fact that they have to tell you that he is super cool tells you he definitely is not.

Go and check out the official site and see what I mean. It’s awful and way beyond being so bad that it’s good. Bonus points if you can get through the video without wanting to smash something.

Mr SuperflySomeone in Ryanair must have a lot resting on the success of Mr Superfly, because the doors on overhead compartments on Ryanair planes are being used as billboards to promote the song. And before the plane takes off you are given a short, sharp burst of the chorus over a loudspeaker. (At least the flight attendants on our flight looked sheepish after playing it.)

I just wish Ryanair would forget all this nonsense and go back to what they used to be good at. 1p flights with no strings – or crappy animated characters – attached.
