Peter v. The Guardian, Round 2

Barely a week after being savaged by Guardian readers over my piece about the cutlery Qantas give children passengers, I’ve raised my head again above the parapets to submit a story about Bondi Beach being granted National Heritage status.

It’s titled As Australian as Budgie Smugglers. The Guardian’s vast budgie-loving constituency are doubtlessly taking aim as we speak.

TOOL ALERT – sondebok says that Bondi is so-so. F*ck me swinging you can’t please some people.

For what it’s worth Bondi is iconic and very nice looking, but there are better beaches that are less crowded, but not many exist in the middle of a big modern city.

And that flashness and the superficiality is a general Sydney thing as well. Of course I am sort of a Melbourne boy, and Melbournites are as cool and food obsessed as Sydneysiders are postcode and money obsessed.

Uncle Hunty – agree totally with your assessment of Mr Sondebok. To be fair, he’s only one of many hanging out on The Guardian blogs!

Re: Superficiality. Without wanting to get into the whole Sydney/Melbourne thing, as a full strength Sydneysider (ie born and bred there) I have to say it’s not as bad as the rest of Australia thinks. Not everyone is obsessed by where they live or how much they earn.

Trouble is, Sydney has the looks. People can’t accept she can have brains as well :-)

The inhabitants of the Guardian blog shit me to tears, though reading these two blog entries over the last few days at work helped me through:

Peter, far be it for one travel blogger to slag another, but what do you think of the Backpacker Blog on SMH?? It seems to me that the interesting subjects get about 30 replies, leading to the next week bringing a contrived controversial topic like whaling or beautiful women of the world.
