My Travel Backpack

Got an email today from a guy called Mathieu Ouellet who has set up a web site for people to post pictures of their backpacks called My Travel Backpack.

I checked it out and it’s not as kinky as it sounds. Just pics of people and their backpacks and a little back story on the trip the photo was taken on. For backpack geeks – if there is such a thing – the brand and capacity of the backpack is displayed as well.

Mathieu asked me if I had a picture I’d like to post so I had a bit of a scratch around. Most of my slides are in my storage unit in Sydney, but I do have all my pics from a trip I did going around the equator back in 1991. (Readers of this blog will know I’m toying around with a few ideas re: that trip).

The photo was one of the few I could find that featured my backpack. (Maybe there’s something wrong with me but I tend to take photos of the local sights and people rather than the dead weight I’m carrying around on my back.)

The pic was taken in the no man’s land between Burundi and Tanzania. I’m on the left. My mate Angelo is in the middle and my other mate Sean is on the right. We were busting out of Burundi after being caught up in a civil war in Bujumburu.

The sad thing is that we’ve never spoken to each other again since that trip.

And for the record, it was a Berghaus Tyger II. 70 litres, I think.

The word ‘tragedy’ certainly sprang to mind when I found the photo.

Actually, it was more like ‘tragic!’
