I’m currently holed up in my loft office beavering away on the final draft of Vroom by the Sea. My publishers in Australia are expecting it at the end of the month.
I spend a lot of time reminiscing while I write my books. I pull out my notepads. I flick through my photos. And I rifle through brochures, postcards and all kinds of crap that I bring back with me. More often than not I come across something that brings a smile to my face.
Like this photo. It was taken in Bolgheri early on in the trip when Marco took me to a small winery/olive oil farm run by his friend Simone. It was a brilliant day. We sat in the sun, drank some wine and ate crusty bread drizzled in olive oil. Then Marco and I jumped on our Vespas and rode away along an avenue lined with Cyprus pines.
The thing that makes me smile about this photo is the back story. It was taken seconds after Giosue (the dog) had cocked his leg on of my Vespa.
English readers might want to see it as a metaphor for the humiliating 5-0 whitewash just handed out to them by the Aussies.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who collects all manner of assorted ‘crap’ on my travels. I still have all manner of Eastern European bus/train tickets from last summer.
When can we look forward to ‘Vroom by the Sea’ then?
And no, I don’t see a small dog urinating on a Vespa as a metaphor for the Ashes (I wondered when you’d be mentioning that). It would have to be something bigger and more embarrassing than that…
Sounds like it is going to be a great book, can’t wait for it…..that and crikey!
As for the ashes……well at least half the team are finally packing up their bats and gloves at last…..also its a shame to see McGrath and Warne go too!!
Q. What is the height of optimism? A. An English Batsman putting on sunscreen!!!!!
Boom boom!
And what do you call an Englishman with 100 runs against his name?
A bowler…
Can’t wait for the newie, Pete!
Nick that last joke just made me snorty-laugh. Thanks mate.
what do Micheal jackson and Gerraint Jones have in common?
They both wear gloves for no reason!! Haha
Just bought your latest book from Singapore and started to read.
It’s a lot of fun.
Great book!
Loved reading your travels around Italy and am looking forward to your latest….funny how we get all sentimental about all the rubbish that we collect on our travels, yep still got the bus tickets, supermarket vouchers etc from Japan……etc etc….
