As I write this, Pet Shop Boys, actually is playing on the cassette player. I found it hidden at the back of the cabinet, with another Alan Parsons Project cassette (I, Robot). It’s like the owner of the house was ashamed of it. Me, I’d be sticking the Michael Bolton there.
In other news, the sun came out today. Not for long. But long enough for us to make our way to the top of Mount Fløyen on the Fløibanen funicular and enjoy the rare sight of Bergen bathed in sunshine. It started raining again as we left and for a few seconds the sky filled with the most intensely-coloured rainbow I have ever seen. It seemed to end on top of the Norwegian Museum of Fisheries out on the northern point of the harbour.
Spent the rest of the day in the sitting room of our house reading Gordon Ramsey’s autobiography, Humble Pie. I’m not sure exactly why I bought it in the first place. It was half price. And I guess I was hoping it would give an insight into what makes him tick. But in the end I found it very superficial, skimming along the surface, listing events and people rather than explaining them. I didn’t take much convincing to put it down and wander out to the Bergen Aquarium with Sally and Daisy.
We got there at four and it was already getting dark. I found it bizarre going into an aquarium when outside the street lights were on. It just felt wrong but that also made it thrilling. The penguins were waddling around in the dark and when we entered the main rotunda where they were feeding the fish, it felt like we were entering the inky depths of the ocean.
The attached souvenir shop was full of breathtakingly expensive tat including penguins made from blue glass. They are the kind of thing my nana used to have and despite needing to take out a bank loan to afford it, I bought one for Daisy. My argument that it will become a family heirloom does not sit well with Sally who has threatened to bin out as soon as I’m not looking.
That’s a pic of it above. I’m sure you’ll agree – it’s destined to become a collector’s piece.
This is where you'll find everything you need to know about me and my books.
I think that is a kickin’ photo you got there with the rainbow! Awesome! I actually had a nice sunset time when I went to the top of Mt. Floyen….that was in July 2005. But I definitely remember quite a bit of rain in Bergen as well — guess everyone has to experience some rain while there. I was due by the time I got there as all the other days I had during the previous week in Norway was nice sunny weather. I actually like the penguin! But I like penguins!
