Happy Birthday to Me

It’s my birthday today. I’m 44 years old. A few of you have sent me congratulatory emails already – thanks for that!

The photo of me and Daisy to your left was taken this morning. I think authors have a duty to post up-to-date photos of themselves. I remember seeing a recent photo of Tom Robbins and being shocked by how old and decrepit he looked. (He is 70, after all.) In the author photo of my copy of Villa Incognito he is wearing a baseball cap, Oakley sunglasses and a beard with no grey in it.

I don’t feel 44 years old. If pressed I’d say I feel like I’m my late thirties. Before Daisy was born I would have said late twenties. (Don’t believe anyone who says that kids keep you young.) I think it’s because time tends to stand still when you’ve spent a good deal of your adult life travelling on third world buses.

Having said that, I hope I’m not one of those sad people who tries to be younger and cooler than they are and use phrases that were hip a few minutes ago but now make everyone cringe.

I’m not far behind you (6 months younger ha ha) and have to say I’m much happier now than I was ten years ago, and definitely wouldn’t want to go back to my turbulant twenties.

    Have a great day.

    Happy birthday Pete

I can relate to your comments as I feel very similar, sometimes I even forget how old I am and how young other people are. I now catagorise them as pre and post Star Wars (the original film of course, if they were born after Star Wars was released then they are officially ‘young’.

Kids will make you older in a hurry…

    С Днем Рождения, Питер!

That’s Happy Birthday and your name in Russian :-) Well, I agree when they say that you are as ols as you feel, so the younger you feel, the younger you are :-) Wish you at least twice as many B’Days as you have had, lots of happiness (sure Daisy will be contributing to it) and hope you visit the rest of the countries that you haven’t been to yet. CHEERS

    Hi peter,
i read your book Swahili….and i saw the book just lying around here at the Youth With A Mission compound here in Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa. Of course, i got interested with the title because i/we are learning a bit swahili in preparation for our trip to Kenya in September. I am here in cape Town, but honestly, i haven’t gone around seeing sights yet because we are in a training program. I love your style and i want to read more of your other books. Just wondering when u got married? Only tonight, i checked your website and read more news about you and your daughter, Daisy. I wanted to see the Africa photo sections. Great!
By the way, i am from Philippines but i work in India.
