Despite predictions by India’s leading astrologers to the contrary, the Aussies lost to the Brazilians at the World Cup yesterday. They defended well, had a couple of chances they didn’t take and generally gave a good account of themselves. As you can see from the picture, our inflatable kangaroo was inconsolable.
According to an article on the Socceroos in The Observer, inflatable kangaroos are a traditional part of Australian culture. I only got mine yesterday. It was a Fathers Day present from Daisy. She also gave me a Caramello Koala.
I’m saving that for when we get through to the second round.
This is where you'll find everything you need to know about me and my books.
Heh, best of luck to the Aussies, though I would say the chances of going through to the second round are rather slim.. Well done soccaroos anyway, considering how football is treated Down Under, they are doing great. Another thing – hope that the participation in the World Cup increases the popularity of this game in Australia, cause when I was there it certainly was not treated as the most popular sport in the World.
Hi Natalia,
You wouldn’t happen to be Croatian, would you? I can’t think of any other reason you’d think our chances of progressing to the second round are slim!
I think the World Cup will have a positive effect on the game in Australia. It won’t take the place of Rugby League or Aussie Rules but it will become more popular.
However, as long as the money is better in Europe though all our best players will go there to play. Some might even sell their souls and play for Croatia like Didulica, Seric and Simunic!
I did think the Aussies put on a great show against Brazil. They looked to be putting their all in right up until the end which is more than I can say for England most of the time!
More importantly though, were England and Australia to meet in a later round…who would Daisy be supporting Peter?!
Cheers!
Adam
Hi Peter! No, I am not Croatian
, I am Russian, so I kinda have specific interest to how the Aussies perform, cause Hiddink will be coaching our team after the World Cup
.
I think we have a good chance of going through to the next round! Bring on Croatia!
PS We did put up a good fight against Brazil didn’t we.
Croatia are just Australia “B”…
Is that “B” for Benny?
Adam:
The general rule here is that she’ll support the Aussies until they get knocked out and then switch to the English. The way the English are playing I suspect she wn’t be supporting them for long.
If it came to the crunch – ie Oz v England – it pains me to say that she’ll have to support the Poms. She was born in the UK and that’s got to count for something.
Natalia:
Russia, cool. I think you’ve got yourself a very good manager there. If he gets the support – and it sounds like he will – you guys are going to be very, very strong in the next World Cup.
Shierly:
Yep, the boys done good. Here’s hoping they do a number on Croatia. Apparently Mark Viduka has a house in Dubrovnik and it’s gonna get trashed by the locals if we win.
Mike J:
Do you mean Benny as ‘Benny from Crossroads?’
I’m a Brit, living in Paris, married to a French man. Although our children were born and brought up in France, they are extremely proud of their English heritage and very avid England supporters. During the England-Sweden match last night, they were running around the flat waving their England flags, running out onto the balcony and yelling in English at the tops of their voices etc. Great fun!
They choose England over France every time, regardless of the sport in question, probably just to annoy their dad. You can imagine the atmosphere in our household if ever there is an England v France fixture!!
Meanwhile it’s been the usual wracking of brains up in Scotland to find excuses for who to support! I’ve been backing firstly Trinidad and Tobago (more Scottish-based players than any other team in the World Cup), then Croatia (my favourite overseas country) and then Australia.
Sorry to say, then, I’ll be rooting for the Croatians tomorrow night – but if the Aussies go through then they’ll get my backing!
Well, Congrats to the socaroos! Hiddink rules! I have to admit that I was wrong about their abilities and getting through to the next round. Can imagine what will be happenning to all the Italians in Australia
) Will be tough for them to choose which team to support
..
By the way, Peter, about Russian football team.. Heh. To say that they fell as low as they could when they didn’t get to the World Cup, is to say nothing.. So I really hope that Hiddink will make something worthy out of our team..Actually, judging by this World Cup, Eastern Europeans are not good at football at all.
