Another event and another night on the tiles – this time with the good folk of Richmond, Virginia. It was 12.45 a.m. before I was finally tucked up in bed. I’m beginning to think that scooter people are different than the rest of us. They seem to be able to operate on less sleep.
Having said that it was a quality evening. The shop front at SCOMO has the feel of a cool warehouse apartment, with old leather lounges and beautifully restored Vespas where the coffee table should be. People laughed at my jokes and bought my books. And afterwards Chelsea, Charlotte, Darren, Tim and Ed took me to their favourite bar, a place that you entered via a normal looking door – complete with a normal looking door handle – at the bottom of a normal looking house.
I wish I could tell you exactly which part of Richmond this bar is in. Or even it’s name. But I really wasn’t paying much attention. I got a lift over to it on the back of Darren’s Lambretta and I was holding on for dear life. Every time he pulled away from the lights I got whiplash.
At the end of the evening – four beers and a meatball sandwich later – I said goodbye to all my new friends and Darren gave me a lift out to my hotel near the airport. The air was cool and because we were ‘out in the county’ Darren took it a little easier because he didn’t know the cops so well out there.
The night clerk gave us a funny look when we arrived. I don’t think many guests arrive back at the hotel after midnight on the back of a restored Lambretta. Especially wearing a glitter helmet.
In my defence, I’d like to point out that it was the only one that would fit my big head.

This is where you'll find everything you need to know about me and my books.
Acapellas is the bar, and Church Hill is the neighborhood of Richmond in which it is located. grin, and Darren being the media whore that he is, I should probably point out that his name only sounds like Dan.
by the way, the velocity of my viscosity is moving a little bit slowly this morning.
it was wonderful to meet you. come back anytime and we’ll get you away from that hayseed airport of ours!
Speaking of scooter people, here’s another Vespa fan:
