Who is up for a beer in York?

I’m doing a talk about my life as a travel writer this Thursday night in York. It’s on at 8 pm at Vanbrugh College, University of York, Heslington, YO10 5DD and everyone is welcome, not just students.

Anyway, as the good folk of the York Union are putting me up for the night, I thought I’d take a leaf out of Joss Whedon’s book and invite any fans in the area to join me for a beer after the show.

Joss Whedon, of course, is the guy responsible for Buffy and Firefly, the TV show that became the movie Serenity. When he came to Sydney to talk about how to create funny, literate TV shows about cute girls fighting vampires he invited fans (via his blog) to join him for a tipple at a pub in The Rocks. Apparently, about 50 people turned up.

So what do you reckon? Surely, at least one of you is up for a pint or two. And any ideas on a suitable pub in York?

UPDATE: I’ve found a web site called the York Pub Guide. It lists both the Top Ten Pubs and the Ten Worst. Sadly, I’m finding myself drawn towards the bad ones!

2 MARCH UPDATE: OK, it looks like we’re playing by ear after the talk. Either The Handsome Cab or The Maltings or maybe something closer to the uni. Best thing to do is come along to the talk and then hit the pub. If you just want to come to the pub, ring Adam Sloan on 0797 484 1563 after 9 pm and see where we are.

Hey Peter, I am actually over in York Friday on business, so think I will see if I can get over over Thursday evening and have a pint [OK a few pints] & kip over.

Dunno re pubs though – the centre full of them, so shouldn’t be a problem for a local fan to come up with a bit of a classic.

    Cool. That’s one person (almost!)

I’ve been checking out the York Pub Guide for tips on a suitable venue. It seems that opinion is divided on what makes a good pub – the quailty of the ale or how attractive the female clientele are. They also have a top 10 and worst 10 pubs. Sadly, I’m finding myself drawn towards the bottom ones!

I won’t be far away on Thursday – Sheffield. However I am catching a train back to Glasgow that evening unfortunately, otherwise would have loved to come. Looking forward to a Glasgow appearance from you though: I missed your Inverness one last summer due to being down under!

The reviews for Flares sound particularly interesting, I’d say. Shame I am not such a jet-setter to just fly in from Honolulu and participate in a good ol’English drinking session… Any chance of your appearance out here?

    No can do Peter.
But if you fancy a beer in London some time, let me know.
I’m up in town most days and it would be good to have a pint with ya!

Can’t make York I’m afraid Peter – but will probably be at the TNT thing in London on the 18th, so if you’re up for a beer or five after that…

York is a no goer for me i’m afraid, but if you are ever Leicester way I will even buy you a beer (it’s the Firefly/Serenity thing that swung it). :)

Dammit! As York is my home town, I’d love to come for a beer but I’m in Sydney on a working holiday. Typical really.
Have a great time – I’d recommend the Red Lion as it’s one of my favourite pubs, or you could take over the Blue Bell (it’s that small)
