Readers of Swahili for the Broken-Hearted might remember that while I was in Nairobi I got work as an extra on the Academy Award winning movie ‘Nowhere in Africa.’ I played the part of a German prisoner and got paid the princely sum of $US150 for three days work. Well, apparently, the movie was just shown on SBS in Australia.
I know this because I’ve received a number of emails from readers who watched the movie especially and couldn’t spot me. I can’t say I’m surprised. My best ‘work’ – the scene in the dining hall – ended up on the cutting room floor. And in the ones that survived I only flicker momentarily on the screen, visible only to those armed with precise timecodes and a steady pause button finger.
Until now. Thanks to popular demand – and an unappealing afternoon of programmes on British televison – I’ve taken stills of the scenes I was in and posted them on a special page within the Swahili web site. And so you don’t strain your eyes from peering too hard, I’ve thoughtfully circled myself in yellow. Check it out here >>>

Just been looking at the stills Peter – is that bald fellow with the ‘tache the Canadian estate agent who got the ‘part’ of the Colonel?
Hey, well spotted Nick. That is Paul, the Canadian. If you ever see that scene, he gets to stand up and walk in front of the main character – bastard!
Managed to star in my own movie in south africa. My dramatic ejection from the DR congo embassy in pretoria was filmed by a bus load of japanese tourists. My plans to do a whistle stop tour of kinshassa, Brazaville and Libreville aroused certain suspicions and my explanation my (i wondered how long it would take and whether I could survive) wasn’t convincing enough….shocking!
not managed to watch the film yet, if you could get SA airways to put in on instead of Duma-the tale of a boy and his leopard, that would be greatly appreciated
