Mario Batali digs it

Well, here it is at last. The cover for the US version of Vroom with a View. My first book published on the American soil. My foot in the old red, white and blue door. It’s all very, very exciting.

You can’t see it here, but the back cover features a quote from Mario Batali. I’d never heard of Mario but apparently he’s one of the most recognizable chefs in America. The main thing is that he had some very nice things to say about Vroom. To be precise – ‘I do not know a single soul who will not totally dig this brilliant love letter to Italy and its favourite way of getting around.’ Seems like a top bloke.

Now, here’s the spooky bit. Having a look around his web site, I realised that although I’d never heard of Mario Batali before I had seen him. It was when I was in Stockholm wandering the backstreets of Gamla Stan. A photo of him astride a Vespa wearing a huge chef’s hat formed the centrepiece of a window display for a kitchenware shop. I even took a photo of the photo, probably at the exact moment he was in New York penning his quote.

You can insert the Twilight Zone music here if you’d like.

Many congratulations on your first assault on the USA, Peter. Wonderful news. I hope it all goes well – do tell us how it goes down over there and what sort of response you hear of!

Hey Congratulations! … Oprah will be phoning anyday now, and once that happens, you’re made. On a more serious note, has anyone sent her a copy?

Hey Peter … you know how you get into a peer group … a social scene … and sometimes they invite you to do certain things … and you go along with it because it’s okay, it’s nothing too rough, nothing like drugs or blackmarket goods … and they ask you to hit on a few others, and really, at the end of the day, people get to learn more about you, and of course now that you’ve cracked the American market you’ll have even more fans popping in to find out about the bloke who wrote the books that they loved?

But to the point … well, I got tagged by a blogger, and I’m meant to ‘tag’ 4 others, and I quite understand if I hear nothing more on this subject however if you are so inclined, have a wee look at my website and see if you’d like to do a 4XMeme on your site … lol, do I dare to press send? Okay, well here’s to you finding something slightly amusing in the long-winded invitation to partake … If not, ‘no worries mate, i’ll still keep buying your books’.

Iron Chef America Mario Batali – Legend and spookily familiar – just think a certain scottish character in Austin Powers movies
Iron Chef is a cult favourite, Iron Chef America is something you watch when you are overseas and there are no other English language programmes on. One day you find yourself disturbingly addicted to the show, and the food stylings of iron chef Mario
