For the past five years I’ve been writing a light-hearted column about travel for TNT magazine in Australia. They didn’t pay me much – it’s a magazine aimed at backpackers after all. And I’m not sure that it raised my profile amongst fellow travellers like they said it would. But it was a lot of fun. Sadly, in June, TNT pulled the plug on it.
They didn’t go into details. And I wasn’t even given the chance to do a farewell column. A new editor was in charge, apparently, and wanted to stamp the magazine with a new identity. I suspect they simply lost respect for me. For five years I got the column in to them on time no matter where I was in the world and I didn’t ask for a pay rise ever. If I’d been more of a diva I’d probably still be writing for them.
Rather than let them rot in a forgotten corner of the TNT web site I’ve decided to put the columns up on my web site here. Starting with my inaugural TNT column from March 2000, I’ll be putting up a few each week. I’m not sure how TNT will feel about that, but as my old headmaster would say, ‘Bugger ‘em’.
There will be sixty-six columns all told. Read them at your leisure.
This is where you'll find everything you need to know about me and my books.
